Repairing Barrel Leak
It’s one of nature’s greatest wonders - why would oak start to leak after 8 problem free years?
Who knows? But we can tell you how to fix it pretty easily, using materials from your local hardware store:
3/8” brad point drill bit
3/8” oak plug or dowel
FDA-compliant 100% silicone
Step One
Locate the crack or leaky pore and mark it. Drill about halfway into the stave (using a stop on the drill bit may ease your mind!) with a 3/8” drill bit, directly on the mark. The leak may stop instantly, or it could be a geyser - don’t worry!
Step Two
Use your caulk gun to inject silicone directly into the drilled hole. Try to use as much pressure as you can (without getting silicone everywhere) as that pressure will force silicone into the crack or pores.
Step Three
Tap your 3/8” oak plug or dowel into the silicone-filled hole with a hammer, until it bottoms out in the hole. Leave the plug in for 12 hours to allow the silicone to cure. After it is cured, cut off the end of the plug with a saw or chisel and you’re good to go!
